Against All Grain, Review & Giveaway.

Recently I purchased the new cookbook Against All Grain by Danielle Walker. I’ve followed Danielle on Facebook and her blog since before I started my own paleo journey about 8 months ago.

Danielle, herself, struggled with autoimmune disease for many years. Modern medicine tried and failed to treat the disease and so she took on her own research to start to heal her body.

As soon as I received my copy of the book I sat down and read it cover to cover. I felt empowered by the strength Danielle showed in sharing her story and how she came about writing the book.

Danielle’s mission in putting together the book she describes was to ‘create grain-free, dairy-free dishes that were reminiscent of the standard American diet’. People are most concerned that by choosing Paleo I am in fact missing out on all the tasty things in life and that I must eat some weird and wonderful food if I’m not eating grains and sugars. My answer is always absolutely not! I adapt a lot of my families favourites into Paleo meals that look ‘normal’ and taste sensational. I think I can appreciate this book so much, because unlike some other Paleo cookbooks, it is what I consider ‘real’ food, and family friendly.

Her approach in the layout of the book is clear and easy to follow. I believe the recipes could easily be prepared by cooks of all levels. The initial information in the book includes kitchen and pantry staples and tips; my favourite is the one that most home cooks forget to do, which is read a recipe through before beginning. Each dish has been beautifully photographed, which for me is important. I believe food is also enjoyed visually, and I like to see what the finished result should ultimately look like.

Most importantly, the 150+ paleo recipes are relevant to an every day diet of someone following this lifestyle. By that I mean that they are not made with hard-to-find ingredients or fancy dishes that are only suitable for special occasions and not my family of fours evening meal. It offers recipes for ‘real’ food that leaves everyone salivating!
