Been missing your oats or porridge? Last week I was contacted by a mum that was making positive changes for her family and trying to eat more paleo meals. But…breakfast was still the one meal she was having trouble letting go of. Her family is a big lover of the humble porridge. Her reason for contacting me was to see if I could come up with a paleo alternative. I’ve thought about a similar recipe to this one for a while now, so it didn’t take much convincing for me to jump at the chance to come up with something that could help her family out.
There were a few stipulations I had to stick to though. Firstly, it had to be nut free. Secondly, the recipe had to be suitable to pop in the slow cooker over night. What a great idea! Pop breakfast in the slow cooker before heading to bed and then waking to breakfast ready to eat. Those few extra minutes of sleep or one less thing to do on a busy morning, that sounds perfect to me.
There is going to come a day on your paleo journey when you just want a treat. Whether is emotional eating, cravings or the situation you’re in. Whatever it is, the day where you battle with yourself will come. If your eating a balanced paleo diet and getting enough of all the important vitamins and minerals, these days won’t be often. But I won’t lie to you and tell you they never happen.
This little ‘treat’ may be what gets you through, without the regrets and/or repercussions. Lets be clear, it is a treat food and not something I’m suggesting for everyday eating. The nuts in this recipe are a great source of good fat and will sustain you for longer. The chocolate, however, really offers no nutritional value.
Lately I’ve been trying to eat a bit cleaner, even Paleo followers can consume a little too much sometimes. Tonight, however, I was craving something sweet. I’ve learnt that if this is the case, I am better to make something naturally sweet using Paleo ingredients, than to succumb to the craving and eat something ‘bad’.
This is usually where most of us fall off the wagon. Our cravings get the better of us and once we’ve broken it once, well we give in and tell ourselves its too hard. So I fed my craving with this pudding, using real food ingredients, and I enjoyed it.
