Its summer here in the land of Oz (Australia) and the sun has been shining. Naturally our bodies crave fresh food with this weather, and for me its all about the seasonal fruit. Watermelon has to be one of my favourite summer fruits to munch into. I remember sitting on the front step, as a child, with a huge wedge of this delicious fruit, munching away until the juice was dripping down my chin. Thankfully my kids have inherited my taste for it (hubby isn’t a fan). On a hot day like today, I came up with this refreshing smoothie to cool the kids down after school and sports. I had to have a glass too of course.
The best part of blending this up in something like the Thermomix, is that you are getting the whole fruit, not just the juice. Fruit naturally contains two types of sugars; sucrose and fructose. The sucrose can be taken care of by the body and processed properly, but fructose goes undetected until it hits the intestines. Here it can be absorbed and do all the wrong things. Fruit comes with fibre, which is the bodies natural helper in eliminating that fructose from it. If you are just juicing your fruit, you are missing out on that fibre. The whole fruit is always the better option.
I realised today that I haven’t shared a smoothie recipe with you…what was I thinking! I usually stick to my favourite protein smoothie recipe, but today I decided to try something a little different. If it worked, I was going to share it with you. If not, well there wouldn’t be this post.
I had something similar to this smoothie at a conference recently, and instantly wanted to make my own. This a usual occurrence when I eat something I like, I try to make my own version of it. I could instantly see the benefits this smoothie would have for filling you up with ‘good stuff’ or more commonly know as good fats.
